Restoration and Upscale

The only remaining record of an article from a 1965 Paris Match magazine was from a copy machine version of a 3”x5” photo print. The color shown in the small photo below was caused by distortion from the copy machine and original photo of the magazine spread.
The task was to make a high resolution capture of the copy machine print and restore it pixel by pixel. The original photo of the magazine article added a moire pattern, which was amplified by the copy machine print that had to be removed through a descreening process. Then a series of tonal adjustments were performed to emulate black and white photography from the 1965 era. An upscaling process was then performed, partially utilizing AI tools to help make a successful enlargement from 3”x5” to a very nice upscaled print at 12”x18”. The centerfold line from the original photo was removed along with other unwanted artifacts using digital tools. Additional AI tools were used to accurately decipher the original text shown on the magazine article spread and translate from French to English.
