Like the wind there is a transparent force in the human spirit that has the power to lift us up – to give us flight. It transcends language as the essence of something deeply known, but not necessarily expressed. It is elusive, but real, rich, powerful and as transparent as the current that eagles ride.
Webster defines "transparency" as being "Capable of transmitting light so that objects or images can be seen as if there were no intervening material." In the human spirit, transparency is like a hidden golden thread that connects us, one to another.
By this thread we are connected in grief, joy, defiance, courage, mercy, grace, endurance and all manner of the extraordinary. Yet, in the commonplace of life there are moments of great richness that can easily get lost. If we are not attentive, ready to receive these tender moments they can slip past us and break the golden thread.
It is important to look deep when a stranger seeks directions in a language you don't understand. Listen hard when a child tells you a story with wide eyes, gestures and mutterings . Lean into hands that signal meanings from those who can not speak. Allow eyes that meet yours squarely, honestly, to meet you through the golden thread.
My granddaughter is full of language that belongs in the world of adults. Yet, with no words at all, and something as simple as an Oreo cookie, she can show me the way of a child and invite me into her world. With a single gesture and facial expression her transparent spirit moves me and I am transformed.
